Earth and Society Initiative

The mission of Earth and Society is to use the University's unique geography and academic strengths to make significant contributions to earth and society in the areas of discovery, learning, public engagement, policy, and civics.

Two emerging developments will influence science and engineering for decades. First is the growing recognition that human activities are profoundly impacting the Earth’s natural processes, thereby affecting the well-being and security of individuals and nations. Second, through a variety of programs, the federal government is determined to invest tens of billions of dollars over the coming decade to address cross-cutting issues pertaining to the environment, human health, well-being, and security.

In recognition of these developments, the Environmental Council is leading a multi-unit effort to ensure that Illinois becomes one of the preeminent institutions working at the intersection of environment, public health, and security. Through our efforts, we seek to capture federal funding that enables us to dramatically increase environmental quality, human well-being, and the security of individuals, communities, and civilizations.
